Hand, Foot and Mouth Blister: What to Know

Blisters may be tender, itchy, or surrounded by mild redness. A cluster on the palms, fingers, soles, or toes can occur with hand, foot and mouth disease, but a blister alone does not identify its cause. Dyshidrotic eczema can produce intensely itchy small blisters on hands and feet, and other problems may cause itchy feet or more general skin blisters. The history of fever, mouth sores, exposures, and the exact distribution helps separate these patterns.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and avoid puncturing or peeling the blister roof. Cover a spot that rubs against footwear with a clean non-stick dressing, and change it when damp or dirty. Wear breathable socks and roomy shoes. Wash hands after touching lesions and do not share towels or personal items. For mouth sores, cool fluids and soft foods may be easier to tolerate. Use any cream or pain medicine only as directed for the person's age.

Contact a clinician if blisters become increasingly painful, hot, swollen, or filled with pus, or if redness spreads. Medical review is also appropriate when fever persists, mouth pain prevents drinking, or the pattern keeps returning. Seek urgent care for severe dehydration, breathing difficulty, confusion, or rapidly worsening illness. A clinician can decide whether treatment such as topical corticosteroids is appropriate for eczema rather than an infection.
