Hand and feet swelling during pregnancy: what to know

Pregnancy changes how the body handles fluid, while the growing uterus can slow blood returning from the legs. Swelling may be more noticeable later in the day, after standing, or in warm weather, and it can affect rings, shoes, fingers, ankles, and feet. Mild swelling in both hands or feet is often different from swelling that appears suddenly, affects one side, or comes with headache or visual symptoms. Take regular movement breaks, avoid standing still for long periods, and rest with your feet raised. Wear comfortable shoes and loosen rings if your fingers begin to swell. Gentle ankle movements and short walks can support circulation when your maternity clinician says activity is suitable. Keep hydrated and avoid taking water tablets or anti-inflammatory medicines unless a clinician specifically advises them during pregnancy.

Contact your maternity team promptly if swelling is sudden, clearly worse on one side, or accompanied by a severe headache, blurred vision, pain beneath the ribs, breathlessness, chest pain, or feeling very unwell. Seek urgent help for chest pain or severe breathing difficulty. A clinician can check your blood pressure, urine, circulation, and other causes rather than judging the symptom alone.

Ask whether the pattern and timing of your swelling are expected, which activities are appropriate for you, and which warning signs should trigger same-day contact. Mention any new headache, vision change, pain, breathlessness, or one-sided swelling, plus medicines and supplements you use.
