What should you know about hand feels swollen and numb?

Numbness can occur when a nerve is compressed at the wrist, elbow or neck. Swelling may result from an injury, fluid in the tissues or joint inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause hand swelling and stiffness, while a distal radius fracture may cause swelling, pain and altered sensation after a fall or impact.

Notice whether the numbness affects particular fingers, one side of the hand or the whole hand. Record when it started, whether symptoms change with wrist position, and whether grip strength or colour has changed. These details help distinguish nerve, joint and injury patterns.

Remove tight rings, watches or bracelets if swelling is developing. Rest from the activity that brings on symptoms and keep the wrist in a neutral, comfortable position. If there was a recent injury, support the hand and avoid testing strength repeatedly.

Do not apply very hot or very cold treatments to numb skin because reduced sensation can hide a skin injury. Arrange medical assessment if symptoms continue, recur or affect grip. An examination may include checking sensation, circulation, movement and the need for imaging.

Seek urgent help for sudden one-sided weakness or numbness with facial drooping, speech trouble, severe dizziness or a new severe headache. Urgent assessment is also needed for a hand that is cold, blue, pale, severely painful, rapidly swollen or deformed after injury.

Promptly contact a clinician when numbness is worsening, grip is failing, symptoms wake you repeatedly, or swelling is accompanied by a hot red joint or fever. Persistent symptoms deserve review even when pain is mild.
