Pins and needles in the hand: what to know

A hand may tingle after you sleep on an arm or keep the wrist bent; changing position usually allows sensation to return. Tingling that returns, spreads or affects both sides can involve a nerve at the wrist, neck or elsewhere. Peripheral neuropathy, type 2 diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency and hypothyroidism are possible medical contributors.

Anxiety or a panic episode can cause tingling during rapid breathing, often with trembling or a racing heart. Pins and needles can also occur with a stroke or transient ischaemic attack, particularly when it starts suddenly with weakness, facial drooping, speech or vision changes.

Change position, loosen anything tight and gently move the fingers. Protect a numb hand from heat, sharp objects and pressure until normal feeling returns. Notice which fingers are affected, how long episodes last and whether neck pain, weakness or dizziness occurs. Arrange a review if the sensation persists, recurs without an obvious position trigger, or affects sleep or hand function.

Call emergency services for sudden one-sided numbness or weakness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, new vision loss, severe imbalance or a sudden severe headache. Urgent review is also needed after a serious injury, or when numbness comes with loss of bladder control or rapidly worsening weakness. Do not drive yourself if stroke-like symptoms are present.

Ask which nerve or body area may be involved, whether glucose, thyroid or vitamin testing is suitable, and whether your medicines or work posture could contribute. Describe the exact fingers, timing, triggers and any associated weakness.
