What should you know about hand ankle swelling?

Short answer
Ankle swelling can come from an injury, joint inflammation, fluid build-up or another local problem, so its timing and associated symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What ankle swelling may mean
A swollen ankle may occur after an ankle sprain, fracture, change in activity or prolonged standing. Warmth and marked tenderness can accompany gout or another inflammatory flare. Stiffness that develops gradually may fit ankle osteoarthritis, while swelling after a twist raises concern for a sprain. The amount of swelling does not by itself show how serious the cause is.
Compare both ankles and note when the swelling began, whether the skin is warm or red, and whether you can put weight through the foot. Bruising, reduced movement or pain over a bone are useful details for a clinician.
What you can do now
For mild swelling after activity, rest from the movement that provokes it, raise the ankle when sitting and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Keep gentle ankle movement within a comfortable range rather than forcing a painful stretch. Supportive footwear can reduce strain.
Avoid massage, heat or strenuous exercise when the ankle is newly injured, very warm or increasingly painful. A clinician can decide whether you need an examination or imaging, especially if walking is difficult.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for an ankle that looks deformed, follows a significant injury, becomes rapidly more swollen, or is accompanied by severe pain, numbness, a cold foot or inability to bear weight. Prompt assessment is also sensible when redness and warmth spread or you feel unwell.
Arrange a medical review when swelling persists, keeps returning, or limits walking and normal activities. Mention any history of gout, arthritis, recent travel, new medicines or an injury.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What could explain the swelling pattern? Do I need an X-ray or another test? Which movements and activities are safe? How should I manage pain, and what changes should prompt a faster review?
