The infection commonly affects young children, although older children and adults can catch it. A fever, sore throat, reduced appetite, and painful mouth sores may appear before or alongside small spots or blisters on the hands and feet; the nappy area can also be involved. Contact with contaminated hands, toys, surfaces, or bodily fluids can pass the virus to others. The illness is different from animal foot-and-mouth disease. Most cases improve with supportive care, but mouth pain can make drinking difficult.

Offer frequent sips of cool fluids and soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Use only age-appropriate pain or fever medicine as directed by a healthcare professional or the product instructions. Keep blisters clean, wash hands after toileting or nappy changes, and avoid sharing cups, utensils, towels, or toys. Clean frequently touched surfaces and keep the child away from nursery or school while feverish or clearly unwell, following local guidance. Seek prompt care if the child cannot drink, urinates much less than usual, is unusually sleepy, has breathing difficulty, develops a persistent or worsening fever, or has severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, or repeated vomiting. These signs can indicate dehydration or a less typical illness. Arrange review if symptoms are not improving or if you are unsure whether the rash and mouth sores fit this infection.
