What should you know about a half cast for wrist fracture?

A clinician may first realign a displaced fracture with Closed Reduction, then apply Fracture Casting to hold the wrist in position. Plaster of Paris and Fibreglass Cast Material are different materials with different handling and drying characteristics. The choice depends on the injury, swelling, skin condition and local practice. A distal radius injury is one example in which wrist support may be needed. The cast restricts movement so the bone and surrounding tissues are not repeatedly stressed.

Keep the cast dry and do not trim, loosen or insert objects underneath it. Elevate the hand when swelling is present, move the fingers gently if instructed, and keep the shoulder and elbow moving within the permitted range. Check the skin at the edges for rubbing. Do not lift, push or drive until your treating team explains what is safe. Healing plans differ; some fractures need a later full cast, a removable support or Fracture Fixation Surgery. Physiotherapy may help restore wrist motion after immobilisation.

Get urgent help if fingers become blue, pale, cold, increasingly numb or difficult to move, or if pain rises sharply despite elevation and prescribed medicine. Contact the fracture service promptly if the cast becomes wet, cracked, loose, tight, foul-smelling or painful at one spot. Fever, drainage or worsening skin irritation also needs assessment rather than home adjustment.

Ask how long the half cast should stay on, whether you may remove it for hygiene, and which movements or loads are allowed. Confirm how swelling should be managed, when imaging or review is planned, and what symptoms mean the cast needs immediate adjustment.
