Hairy cell leukaemia immunohistochemistry

Short answer

Immunohistochemistry helps pathologists identify hairy cell leukaemia by detecting characteristic proteins on abnormal blood or bone-marrow cells.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Marker patterns are combined with other tests

What the test means

A specialist applies antibodies to a prepared sample, often from a biopsy or bone-marrow examination. The antibodies attach to selected proteins, creating stains that can be viewed under a microscope. Hairy cell leukaemia has a recognisable pattern of markers, but no single stain is interpreted in isolation. The pathologist combines the appearance of the cells with blood counts, flow cytometry, molecular findings and the clinical picture. A positive marker supports a diagnosis; it does not by itself describe how extensive the disease is or determine treatment.

What happens next

Ask which sample was tested, which markers were detected, and whether the findings are typical, atypical or still incomplete. If the result is uncertain, your team may recommend additional blood tests, flow cytometry or a repeat sample. Read the pathology report with your haematologist, because marker names can be difficult to interpret without the surrounding findings. When to seek medical help

Contact your haematology team promptly for fever, chills, unusual bleeding, black stools, marked weakness or breathlessness. These symptoms can occur when abnormal blood counts reduce infection-fighting cells, platelets or red cells. Emergency care is appropriate for severe breathlessness, uncontrolled bleeding, confusion or collapse.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what markers were found, how they fit with the blood and marrow results, whether more testing is needed, and when you will receive the integrated diagnosis. Ask also how to report fever or bleeding while the assessment is continuing.

Questions people ask

Does one positive stain confirm hairy cell leukaemia?

Usually, no. Diagnosis relies on a pattern of findings interpreted by a specialist pathologist and haematologist.

Is immunohistochemistry the same as a biopsy?

No. A biopsy obtains tissue or cells; immunohistochemistry is a laboratory staining method that may be performed on that sample.
