Haircut razor bumps: what to know

Small itchy or tender bumps around recently shaved hairs are often ingrown hairs, particularly in coarse or tightly curled hair. Razor bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis barbae, can affect the beard area, neck, scalp edge, or other clipped regions. Pus, spreading redness, or crusting may suggest folliculitis instead. Keratosis pilaris can look similar but commonly causes persistent rough bumps on the upper arms or thighs.

Pause close shaving until the skin settles. Wash gently, avoid picking or digging out hairs, and use a clean guarded trimmer if hair must be shortened. Shave in the direction of growth with a lubricating product, using light pressure and as few passes as possible. Loose collars and reduced rubbing can also help.

If bumps recur, a clinician can discuss topical treatment or Laser Hair Removal, especially when shaving repeatedly triggers inflammation. Dark marks can remain after bumps heal, so prevention matters.

Seek review if bumps are painful, pus-filled, spreading, leaving scars, or returning despite gentler grooming. Fever, rapidly increasing swelling, or redness extending beyond the shaved area warrants prompt medical attention.
