What should you know about hair grooming syncope?

Short answer
Hair grooming syncope is fainting or near-fainting during hair care, often linked to a reflex drop in blood pressure or heart rate.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First response
- Stop, sit or lie down, and protect yourself from falling
- Record
- Note posture, warning signs, and recovery
- Emergency signs
- Chest pain, breathlessness, injury, or confusion
Why it can happen
Standing still, raising the arms, pulling the scalp, heat, pain, fear, or dehydration can contribute to a fainting reflex. Warning symptoms may include warmth, nausea, sweating, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, or sudden weakness. The episode should still be assessed in context. Anaemia, low blood sugar, dehydration, and heart rhythm problems such as Atrial Fibrillation can also cause dizziness or collapse, so the trigger does not prove the explanation.
What to do during grooming
At the first warning, stop grooming and sit or lie down in a safe place. If possible, lie flat and raise your legs, loosen tight clothing, and stay there until you feel fully alert. Groom seated, take breaks, avoid very hot water, and drink fluids unless a clinician has restricted them. Do not climb, use heated tools while dizzy, or continue alone after a collapse. Record the activity, posture, warning signs, duration, and recovery for a clinician.
When to seek care
Emergency care is needed after fainting with chest pain, severe breathlessness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, seizure-like movements, serious injury, or prolonged confusion. Seek urgent assessment if the episode occurs during exertion, without warning, or repeatedly. Arrange a routine review after any unexplained collapse, especially if medicines, bleeding, poor intake, or a known heart condition may be involved.
Questions for your doctor
Could my symptoms reflect a reflex faint, anaemia, dehydration, low blood sugar, or a rhythm problem? Do I need an examination, blood tests, or heart monitoring? Which activities should I pause for now?

Questions people ask
Should I keep brushing if I feel light-headed?
No. Stop immediately and sit or lie down, because continuing increases the chance of a fall.
Does grooming syncope always mean a heart problem?
No. A reflex response can cause it, but repeated or unexplained fainting still needs medical assessment.
