H2 blockers for heartburn: what to know

Heartburn happens when stomach contents move upwards and irritate the food pipe. H2 blockers reduce the acid released by the stomach, which may lessen the burning sensation and give irritated tissue time to settle. They do not repair every underlying cause. Acid reflux, gastritis, a peptic ulcer, or a hiatus hernia can produce overlapping upper-abdominal or chest symptoms, so the pattern matters.

Use an H2 blocker only as directed on its label or by a healthcare professional. Check before use if you take regular medicines, are pregnant, or have kidney or other long-term health problems. Eat slowly, choose smaller portions, and remain upright after meals. Note when heartburn appears and what preceded it; this can help a clinician decide whether acid reflux medication or another approach is appropriate.

Emergency care is appropriate for chest discomfort with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain extending to the arm, jaw, or back. Seek prompt assessment for difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, persistent vomiting, or unexplained weight loss.
