What should you know about gynecomastia letrozole?

Gynecomastia is enlargement of glandular breast tissue, often linked to an imbalance between androgen and oestrogen effects. Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor that reduces conversion of some hormones into oestrogen. It is used in selected cancer care settings, not as a general self-treatment for breast enlargement. Breast tenderness or a lump can have several causes, including medicines, hormonal conditions and normal tissue changes, so examination matters.

Do not start, stop or borrow letrozole for breast enlargement. Arrange a clinical review with a doctor who can examine the tissue and review medicines, supplements, puberty or hormonal history, liver or kidney problems, and testicular symptoms where relevant. If letrozole has already been prescribed for cancer treatment, continue it unless the prescribing team advises otherwise and report breast symptoms. The clinician may decide that observation, a different medicine review or another assessment is appropriate.

Seek prompt assessment for a firm one-sided lump, nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple retraction, enlarged armpit nodes or rapidly changing breast tissue. Seek urgent help for severe allergic symptoms or sudden chest pain and breathlessness. New pain while taking letrozole should be reported, particularly if it affects movement or daily activities.

Ask what is causing the breast change, whether any current medicine may contribute, whether letrozole is suitable for your cancer plan, and what examination or imaging is needed. Ask about bone, joint, cholesterol and menopausal-type effects if letrozole is prescribed.
