What should you know about guttate lichen planus?

Guttate means the eruption appears in multiple small, separate areas rather than as one broad plaque. Lesions may look red, violet, brown, or darker than the surrounding skin, depending on skin tone and how long they have been present. Itching is common, and scratching can cause crusting or temporary colour change. Lichen planus can also affect the mouth, nails, scalp, or genital skin, so mention symptoms outside the visible rash. A clinician usually makes the diagnosis from the pattern and may recommend a biopsy when other rashes look similar.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser, keep nails short, and choose loose clothing to reduce rubbing. Seek urgent care for eye pain or vision change, difficulty swallowing, extensive blistering, or signs of infection such as increasing warmth, pus, and fever. A new widespread rash after starting a medicine also deserves prompt review; do not stop an essential medicine without medical advice.
