What should you know about gut resection?

The surgeon may remove part of the small intestine, large intestine or rectum, along with nearby tissue and lymph nodes when needed for diagnosis or treatment. The approach can be open surgery or keyhole surgery. If the bowel cannot be joined safely at that time, a temporary or longer-term stoma may bring bowel contents through an opening in the abdomen. The exact plan depends on the bowel segment, the reason for surgery, your general health and findings during the operation.

Follow the hospital instructions about eating, drinking, bowel preparation and medicines. Arrange help at home, keep the wound clean as instructed and increase walking gradually. Your team will explain when to restart food, how to care for a stoma if you have one, and which pain medicines to use. Contact the surgical team before changing medicines or lifting heavy objects. Recovery of bowel function can take time, and bowel habits may differ from before surgery.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or increasing abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, faintness, breathing difficulty or inability to pass stool or gas. Contact your surgical team promptly for fever, worsening redness or discharge from the wound, persistent diarrhoea, or a stoma that becomes very swollen, dark or stops working with pain.

Ask which bowel segment will be removed, whether a stoma is possible, how the operation may affect eating and bowel movements, and which symptoms require same-day advice. Ask when the pathology result and follow-up plan will be discussed.
