Gum and ear pain: what could connect them?

Inflamed gums, a tooth problem, jaw clenching, or irritation around a wisdom tooth can be felt near the ear. Earwax buildup, a middle-ear infection, or throat inflammation can cause ear pain without being caused by the gums. A cold or sinusitis may create pressure around the face and ear, while tonsillitis can send pain toward the ear when swallowing.

Notice whether chewing, biting, swallowing, moving the jaw, or touching the ear changes the pain. Swelling, bad taste, bleeding gums, reduced hearing, fever, or fluid from the ear can help a clinician distinguish the source. Earache is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, so the painful area alone may not identify the cause.

Arrange a dental assessment if the gum is swollen, tender, bleeding repeatedly, or painful around one tooth. Arrange medical or ear assessment for reduced hearing, ear discharge, fever, or pain that is not improving. Keep the area clean with gentle brushing, avoid very hot or cold foods if they trigger pain, and use only pain medicine that is suitable for you. Do not put objects or unprescribed drops into the ear.

Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing facial or neck swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, inability to open the mouth normally, severe dizziness, or a very unwell feeling. Prompt assessment is also needed for severe pain with fever or pus, because infection near the mouth or ear can spread.

Ask whether the pain is more consistent with a gum, tooth, jaw, ear, or throat source; whether you need an ear examination or dental imaging; which pain relief is appropriate; and what changes should trigger same-day review.
