How the structures involved in Hepatitis B differ from normal

Short answer

A GSK hepatitis B vaccine helps protect against hepatitis B, with the product and schedule chosen according to your health and vaccination history.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the vaccine does

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that can affect the liver. Vaccination presents the immune system with material that trains it to recognise the virus without causing hepatitis B infection. Protection develops after the recommended doses, and some people need an individual plan because of their age, immune health, or exposure risk.

Common short-term reactions can include soreness, redness, swelling at the injection site, tiredness, headache, or a mild fever. These usually settle without specific treatment. A vaccine cannot treat an existing hepatitis B infection, so testing may still be appropriate when exposure or symptoms are a concern.

Before and after vaccination

Tell the vaccinator about previous vaccine reactions, severe allergies, pregnancy, immune conditions, and medicines that affect immunity. Bring any record of earlier hepatitis B doses. Keep the appointment schedule given to you, because an incomplete course may leave protection less certain.

After the injection, remain where staff can observe you for the period they recommend. Rest, drink fluids, and use only a pain or fever medicine that is suitable for you. A healthcare professional can explain whether you need an antibody blood test after completing the course.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, fainting, or sudden severe illness after vaccination. Contact a clinician for a persistent high fever, worsening injection-site swelling, or symptoms that concern you. Dark urine or marked fatigue also deserve assessment because they can have causes unrelated to vaccination.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which hepatitis B vaccine is planned? How many doses do I need? When is the next dose due? Do my medicines or immune condition change the schedule? Do I need hepatitis B testing or a liver function test?
