What should you know about growth scan weeks?

Gestational age gives the team a framework for interpreting fetal measurements. A scan may be arranged to establish a growth pattern, review a previous finding or monitor a pregnancy that needs closer observation. The team compares measurements with dating information and earlier examinations rather than treating a week label as a diagnosis.

The assessment can include fetal size, fluid, placenta, position, movement and blood flow. Follow-up may be planned when the picture is incomplete or when the clinician wants to observe change over time.

Keep the appointment and take any requested maternity records. Confirm whether the scan is abdominal and whether preparation is needed. Tell the service if your dates are uncertain, you have had care elsewhere or your maternity team has asked for a particular set of measurements.

Afterward, ask when the result will be reviewed. Keep routine antenatal visits even when the scan is reassuring, because those visits check different aspects of pregnancy health.

Contact your maternity service promptly if fetal movements reduce or change, or if you develop bleeding, leaking fluid, severe abdominal pain or regular painful contractions. Seek urgent care for severe headache with visual symptoms, chest pain, significant breathlessness or sudden swelling with feeling unwell. The calendar week does not change the need to act on red-flag symptoms.

Ask what the scan is checking, why it is planned for this week, whether comparison with an earlier scan is needed, and how you will receive the result. Confirm the number to use if concerns arise before the appointment.
