What should you know about growth scan sonography?

A sonographer uses a probe over the abdomen to create images of the fetus. They may measure the head, abdomen and thigh bone, check heartbeat and movement, and assess fluid, placenta and fetal position. Doppler sonography can examine blood flow when it is clinically indicated.

The report may describe measurements, estimated size, fluid and blood-flow findings. These observations are considered with pregnancy dates, earlier scans and your symptoms. A scan can identify a need for monitoring, but it cannot answer every question about health before birth.

Wear comfortable clothing and follow any preparation guidance from the imaging service. Tell the sonographer about your pregnancy dates and bring earlier reports if requested. Ask how the images will be reviewed and when your maternity clinician will explain the result.

The examination may need extra time if the baby is facing away or moving frequently. Changing position or returning for another assessment can sometimes help obtain the required views.

Do not use a planned sonography appointment as a safety check for new symptoms. Contact maternity care urgently if movements are reduced, or if you have bleeding, leaking fluid, severe pain or regular painful contractions. Severe headache with visual changes, chest pain or difficulty breathing also needs prompt medical attention.

Ask which measurements were obtained, whether Doppler was needed, how the findings compare with previous scans, and what follow-up is planned. Ask who to contact if movements change before the next appointment.
