What should you know about a growth scan at 26 weeks?

The scan may record head, abdominal, and thigh-bone measurements and use them to estimate fetal size. It can also review the heartbeat, movement, amniotic fluid, placenta, and, when clinically indicated, blood flow. A single result cannot explain every pregnancy difference. Your clinician considers the dates, earlier measurements, your health, and the shape of the growth pattern before recommending follow-up.

Bring previous ultrasound reports and your maternity notes. Ask whether you need any preparation and how long the appointment may take. Tell the team about changes in symptoms or movements before the scan begins. Keep the written report and confirm who will discuss it with you, especially if the scan was arranged because of an earlier concern.

Contact your maternity service urgently for bleeding, suspected waters breaking, severe abdominal pain, painful regular contractions, severe headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, or a marked change in your baby's usual movement pattern. These concerns should be assessed on their own merits.

Ask what prompted the 26-week scan, whether the measurements are consistent with earlier scans, whether fluid and blood flow need attention, how results affect monitoring, and which symptoms should lead you to call before the next appointment.
