Short answer

A growth on breast skin may be harmless, but a new, changing, painful, bleeding, or persistent growth should be examined by a clinician.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

A growth on breast skin may be harmless, but a new, changing, painful, bleeding, or persistent growth should be examined by a clinician. Skin changes on the breast can come from the surface skin, a hair follicle, or tissue beneath the skin, so an examination helps identify where the change starts.

What a breast-skin growth can mean

A small raised area may be an irritated hair follicle, blocked pore, cyst, boil, or thickened scar. Friction, shaving, sweating, and tight clothing can make some surface lumps sore or inflamed. A boil may become tender, warm, red, or filled with pus.

Some growths are harmless moles or other non-cancerous skin lesions. Basal cell carcinoma can present as a skin growth that does not heal, bleeds easily, crusts, or changes gradually. This appearance is not enough to diagnose it; a clinician may need to inspect the area closely and arrange testing if the finding is concerning.

Notice whether the change is on the skin surface or feels deeper, whether it is attached to the skin, and whether the nipple or surrounding skin has also changed. A skin lump is different from a deeper breast lump, although both deserve assessment when they are new or persistent.

What to do now

Do not squeeze, pierce, cut, or repeatedly scratch the growth. Keep the area clean and dry, reduce rubbing, and avoid applying steroid or antibiotic creams unless a clinician recommends one. Take a clear photograph beside a familiar reference, such as a ruler, and note when you first noticed it and whether it is changing.

Arrange a routine appointment with a dermatologist or primary-care clinician if the growth remains, returns, or is difficult to identify. Treatment depends on the diagnosis and may include observation, drainage for a suitable infection, removal of a lesion, or an injection into the skin for selected inflamed scars or nodules.

When to seek care promptly

Seek prompt medical care if the growth is rapidly enlarging, increasingly painful, hot, or surrounded by spreading redness; if pus, fever, or feeling unwell accompanies it; or if it repeatedly bleeds, crusts, ulcerates, or fails to heal.

Also seek assessment for a new nipple inversion, bloody nipple discharge, dimpling, marked skin thickening, or a deeper breast lump. These signs do not identify one specific cause, but they should not be self-diagnosed or monitored indefinitely.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the growth appears to arise from the skin or deeper tissue, what features make the diagnosis more or less concerning, and whether it needs monitoring, imaging, a swab, or a skin biopsy. You can also ask which changes should prompt an earlier review and whether any treatment could leave a scar.

Questions people ask

Can a growth on breast skin be a boil?

Yes. A boil can cause a tender, warm, red lump, sometimes with pus. Do not squeeze it; prompt care is needed if redness spreads, pain worsens, or fever develops.

Should every breast-skin growth be removed?

No. Removal depends on what the growth is, whether it is changing or troublesome, and what a clinician finds on examination. Some lesions can be observed safely.

What if the growth bleeds?

Cover it gently with clean gauze and arrange prompt medical assessment, especially if bleeding recurs or the area crusts or does not heal.
