Short answer

Groin pain while sitting can be related to hip position, muscle tension, or a joint problem, especially when symptoms ease after standing or changing position.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Often provoked by
Low chairs, deep sofas, driving, or prolonged hip bending
Try
A firm supportive seat and regular comfortable movement breaks
Notice
Stiffness on standing, clicking, back pain, or swelling

What the sitting pattern can suggest

Sitting keeps the hips bent and may increase pressure or tension at the front of the hip. A low chair, deep sofa, or prolonged driving position can be more provocative than an upright seat. Hip impingement may cause deep groin discomfort with bending, while a labral tear can be associated with catching or clicking. Hip osteoarthritis may produce stiffness after sitting and discomfort when standing. Tight or irritated inner-thigh muscles can also hurt when the legs are held apart or squeezed together. Pain can also be referred from the lower back, so accompanying back symptoms are worth mentioning.

Ways to make sitting easier

Change position regularly and choose a firm seat that allows your knees and hips to stay comfortable. Avoid very low chairs and do not force the hip into a deep bend. Take brief movement breaks, walk gently if comfortable, and use a neutral posture while driving. Do not repeatedly test the painful movement. Record whether sitting duration, seat height, getting up, or crossing the legs affects symptoms. A clinician or physiotherapist can check hip and spine movement and recommend targeted changes.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for severe sudden pain, inability to stand or bear weight, a hip deformity after injury, fever with a hot swollen joint, or new weakness or numbness. Arrange an appointment if sitting pain is persistent, increasingly limits work or driving, disturbs sleep, or is accompanied by groin swelling, urinary symptoms, or unexplained weight loss.

Questions for your doctor

Does the sitting position point to a hip, muscle, or back source? What seat height and movement breaks would suit me? Should I avoid crossing my legs or deep hip bending? Would physiotherapy or imaging help clarify the cause?

Questions people ask

Why can sitting hurt but walking feel easier?

Sitting holds the hip in a bent position, while gentle walking changes the joint angle and may reduce one sustained pressure point.

Does sitting pain prove there is a hip tear?

No. Sitting pain has several possible sources, including muscles, the hip joint, and the lower back, and needs assessment for clarification.
