Groin pain when stretching: what it can mean

Short answer

Groin pain when stretching can mean the inner-thigh tissues or hip joint are being irritated, so stop the painful stretch and seek advice if symptoms persist or recur.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What pain during a stretch may indicate

A stretch can lengthen the adductor muscles, hip flexors, and tissues around the hip. A mild pulling sensation is different from sharp pain, pinching, or pain that lingers afterwards. Inner-thigh tenderness may follow a muscle or tendon overload. Deep pinching, catching, or reduced hip rotation can occur with hip impingement or a labral tear. Stiffness and aching with several hip movements can occur with hip osteoarthritis. These conditions may present with groin pain, but a stretch response cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Think about what changed before the pain began: a new exercise, greater range, longer hold, or return to sport. Record the exact stretch and whether walking, stairs, sitting, or turning also hurts.

How to respond safely

Stop the stretch that causes pain and avoid bouncing or forcing the range. Keep gentle, comfortable movement during the day so the hip does not become more guarded. A wrapped cold pack may help after a recent strain; use a towel barrier and short applications. Return to stretching only with professional guidance and a smaller, comfortable range. Physiotherapy can check hip and muscle movement and progress strengthening; sports physiotherapy is relevant when training technique or workload is involved.

When to seek care

Get urgent help after a sudden injury if you cannot bear weight, pain is severe, or the leg appears abnormal. Prompt care is appropriate for fever with a hot swollen joint, new leg weakness or numbness, or a painful groin swelling. Book an assessment if pain lasts beyond the initial flare, returns each time you stretch, causes a limp, or limits ordinary activity.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which tissues the stretch may be loading, whether you should pause flexibility work, and how to restart movement safely. Tell the clinician whether pain is a pull, pinch, or click, and describe any injury or recent training change.

Questions people ask

Is groin pain during stretching normal?

A gentle pull can be expected, but sharp, pinching, or lingering pain is a reason to stop and reassess the movement.

Can stretching worsen a groin strain?

Forcing range or bouncing can aggravate irritated muscle or tendon tissue, especially soon after an injury.
