Groin pain when standing up: what it can mean

Short answer
Groin pain when standing up can occur as the hip moves from a bent position into weight-bearing, and repeated or worsening pain should be assessed rather than pushed through.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Movement involved
- Hip bending followed by weight-bearing
- Helpful adjustment
- Use a firm higher seat and avoid twisting
- Track
- Pain on rising, first steps, limp, or clicking
Why rising can hurt
Standing from a chair combines hip bending, muscle effort, and a shift of body weight. Weak or irritated hip flexor and inner-thigh tissues may hurt as they help you rise. Deep groin pain, catching, or a blocked feeling can occur with hip impingement or a labral tear. Stiffness after sitting and pain with the first steps can occur with hip osteoarthritis. Groin pain can present with these conditions, but the symptom does not identify one cause by itself.
Pay attention to whether using your hands, sitting in a higher chair, or taking shorter steps changes the pain. Report any recent fall, new limp, clicking, swelling, or pain that extends below the knee.
Making the movement easier
Choose a firm, higher seat and place both feet under you before rising. Lean slightly forward and push through the feet rather than twisting as you stand. Break up long sitting periods with comfortable movement, but do not repeatedly practise a painful rise. Reduce heavy lifting, deep squats, and sudden direction changes until symptoms settle. Physiotherapy can assess strength and movement control; sports physiotherapy may suit people whose symptoms are linked to running, football, or other training.
When to get help
Seek urgent care if pain follows a major injury and you cannot stand or bear weight, or if the hip is visibly deformed. Prompt assessment is needed for fever with a hot swollen joint, new weakness or numbness, or a painful groin lump. Arrange a clinical review when every rise is painful, a limp develops, symptoms disturb sleep, or improvement does not follow sensible activity changes.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pain is more consistent with a muscle, tendon, or hip joint problem; how to modify chairs and exercise; and whether a strength or movement assessment is needed. Explain whether the first steps after standing are also painful.

Questions people ask
Why can standing from a chair hurt the groin?
Rising loads the hip and inner-thigh muscles while the joint moves from flexion into weight-bearing; several conditions can produce this pattern.
When should pain on standing be checked?
Arrange an assessment when it is repeated, worsening, associated with a limp or clicking, or does not improve after changing activity.
