Groin pain when spreading your legs: what it can mean

Short answer
Groin pain when spreading your legs can reflect strained inner-thigh muscles or irritation inside the hip, and the painful movement should not be forced while you arrange advice if it continues.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main tissues involved
- Inner-thigh muscles and the hip joint
- Avoid for now
- Wide-leg stretching that reproduces pain
- Useful detail
- Injury, bruising, weakness, or clicking
What spreading the legs loads
Moving the legs apart stretches and lengthens the adductor muscles along the inner thigh. A sudden change in sport, a slip, or an overenthusiastic stretch can irritate these tissues, causing local tenderness or pain when squeezing the legs together. Deep joint pain, catching, clicking, or restricted rotation may occur with hip impingement or a labral tear. Hip osteoarthritis can present with groin pain and stiffness during several hip movements. The movement pattern is a clue, not a diagnosis.
Note whether the pain is sharp or aching, whether it began after an injury, and whether coughing, walking, stairs, or turning in bed also aggravate it. A clinician can compare hip range of motion and strength with the other side.
What to do today
Pause wide-leg stretches, side lunges, and any activity that reproduces the pain. Walk only as comfortably as you can, and use a smaller range for daily movements. For a recent flare, a wrapped cold pack may ease soreness; do not place it directly on the skin. Do not return to sport until ordinary walking and gentle movement are comfortable. A physiotherapist can build a gradual strengthening plan, including sports physiotherapy when training is part of the problem.
Warning signs
Get urgent help after a fall or forceful movement if you cannot bear weight, the leg appears shortened or rotated, or pain is severe and sudden. Seek prompt care for fever with a hot swollen hip, new numbness or weakness, or a groin bulge that is painful or cannot be pushed back. Make a routine appointment if symptoms recur, bruising or weakness persists, or pain limits walking or exercise.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the adductor muscles or hip joint are more likely involved, when gentle strengthening can begin, and whether you need an examination or imaging. Describe the exact angle that hurts, any pop or click, and the activity that preceded it.

Questions people ask
Should you stretch through groin pain?
No. Stop a stretch that causes sharp or increasing pain and use comfortable movement until the cause is clearer.
What does inner-thigh tenderness suggest?
It can occur when an adductor muscle or tendon is irritated, particularly after a sudden load, but an examination is needed to distinguish it from hip pain.
