What it may mean

Groin pain in the second trimester can reflect changing pelvic load or irritated muscles, but pregnancy warning signs need prompt clinical advice. As the abdomen grows, posture, walking pattern, and the work of the pelvic and inner-thigh muscles can change. Discomfort may be linked to turning in bed, stairs, getting out of a car, or longer walks. Pain alone cannot identify the cause, so describe it to your maternity team.

Separating movement pain from other symptoms

Musculoskeletal pain is often related to a position or activity and may ease with rest or support. Hip conditions such as impingement, a labral tear, or osteoarthritis can also cause groin symptoms and may need assessment. Pregnancy-related pain should be considered alongside bleeding, fluid leakage, regular tightening, fever, painful urination, dizziness, or reduced fetal movement when relevant to your stage of pregnancy.

Comfort measures during pregnancy

Change position regularly, take shorter walks, and avoid movements that cause a sharp or escalating pain. Supportive footwear, a pillow between the knees, and rolling the whole body when turning may reduce strain. Gentle pregnancy-appropriate movement can preserve strength; a maternity physiotherapist can adapt pelvic, hip, and inner-thigh exercises. Do not start medication, supplements, or a support belt without checking with your maternity clinician, particularly if pain is new or severe.

Contact your maternity team promptly

Contact your maternity team promptly for vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, regular painful contractions or tightening, fever, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, faintness, painful urination, or a new inability to walk. Urgent help is also appropriate for chest pain, breathlessness, or sudden one-sided leg swelling. Even without these signs, persistent groin pain that limits sleep or walking deserves a pregnancy-aware examination.

Questions for your appointment

Could this pain be coming from my pelvic joints, hip, or inner-thigh muscles? Which activities and exercises are suitable for me now? Are there pregnancy symptoms that should change my urgency? Is a maternity physiotherapy assessment appropriate? Which pain-relief options are compatible with my pregnancy?
