Short answer

Groin pain from sitting may come from prolonged hip flexion, irritated muscles, or a hip joint problem, so changing position and tracking symptoms can help guide care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Useful clue
Record whether pain starts during sitting or when you stand.
Position
A higher seat may reduce deep hip flexion.

What it may mean

A low chair, long drive, or desk session keeps the hip bent and may irritate tissues at the front of the hip or inner thigh. Pain that appears when standing, climbing stairs, or bringing the knee toward the chest can also occur with hip impingement. A catching sensation, clicking, or restricted movement deserves assessment because a hip labral tear can present with groin pain. Hip osteoarthritis may cause stiffness after rest and discomfort with walking, but groin pain alone does not identify one diagnosis.

What you can do

Break up sitting with brief, comfortable movement and use a chair that lets your hips sit slightly higher than your knees. Avoid repeatedly forcing a painful stretch or testing deep hip flexion. For a few days, reduce activities that reproduce the pain, then resume easy walking if it remains comfortable. Note the position, activity, side, and duration of each episode. A clinician or physiotherapist can examine hip motion, strength, and the lower back to decide whether rehabilitation or further assessment is appropriate.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain persists, keeps returning, limits sleep or walking, or is accompanied by locking, giving way, or a noticeable loss of hip movement. Seek urgent care after a significant injury, or if you cannot bear weight, have marked swelling, fever, new numbness, or severe rapidly worsening pain.

Questions for your doctor

Could the pain be coming from the hip joint, inner-thigh muscles, lower back, or another area? Which movements should I pause, and how should I return to sitting and exercise? Would physiotherapy help assess my hip control and sitting position?

Questions people ask

Why can sitting trigger groin pain?

Sitting keeps the hip flexed and may load irritated muscles or sensitive structures around the hip.

Should I stop all activity?

Avoid movements that clearly worsen symptoms, while gentle comfortable movement can prevent stiffness.
