Groin pain after swimming: causes and what to do

Short answer
Groin pain after swimming may reflect irritated muscles or hip movement, but persistent, severe, or unusual pain needs clinical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Repeated kicking or forceful hip movement
- Track
- Stroke, movement, side, and timing
- Helpful specialist
- Sports physiotherapist or clinician
What it may mean
Breaststroke and forceful kicking repeatedly move the hip and inner-thigh muscles. A sudden increase in distance, awkward push-off, or poor control can irritate the adductors or hip flexors. Pain with lifting the knee, squeezing the legs, or turning may help a clinician identify the involved tissue.
Pain deep in the front of the hip, clicking, catching, or reduced rotation can also occur with hip impingement or a hip labral tear. Hip osteoarthritis may cause stiffness and discomfort that becomes more noticeable after activity. Groin pain can have several causes, so the symptom alone does not identify one condition.
What to do now
Pause the stroke, kicking drill, or wall push-off that brings on pain. Keep gently mobile within comfort, and avoid forceful stretching or testing the painful movement repeatedly. A wrapped cold pack may feel helpful soon after a flare. Resume swimming gradually only when ordinary walking and easy hip movement are comfortable.
Record which stroke, distance, movement, and side trigger symptoms. A sports physiotherapist can assess strength, hip control, and technique, then guide a staged return.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment if pain persists, keeps returning, limits walking, or is accompanied by weakness, swelling, bruising, fever, or pain at rest. Seek urgent care after a major injury, inability to bear weight, sudden severe pain, numbness, or a cold or pale leg.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which hip or groin structures may be involved, whether an examination is enough, which activities to pause, and how to rebuild kicking and rotation safely.

Questions people ask
Should I keep swimming with groin pain?
Stop the movement that provokes pain and choose gentle activity only if it remains comfortable.
Can hip problems cause groin pain while swimming?
Yes. Hip impingement, a labral tear, or osteoarthritis can make hip rotation or kicking painful, but an examination is needed to distinguish them.
