Groin pain after soccer: what to know

Short answer

Groin pain after soccer often follows overload of the inner-thigh or hip muscles, but a hip injury or joint problem can also be involved and needs assessment if it persists.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical loads
Sprinting, kicking, tackling and rapid changes of direction
Early modification
Comfortable walking while avoiding painful running and cutting
Return sequence
Everyday movement, strengthening, running, drills, then play

Why soccer can trigger it

Sprinting, kicking, tackling and cutting place rapid load through the adductor muscles and the front of the hip. A sudden pull may cause local tenderness, while pain that builds during play can reflect fatigue or repeated overload. Hip impingement, a hip labral tear and hip osteoarthritis can present with groin pain and may be aggravated by deep hip flexion or rotation. Bruising, weakness, a popping sensation or pain with a resisted squeeze can help a clinician understand the pattern, but do not diagnose it alone.

A sensible recovery plan

Stop soccer if running, kicking or changing direction hurts. For the first phase, choose comfortable walking and avoid sprinting, sharp cuts and painful stretching. Use a cold pack after an acute strain if soothing, with a cloth barrier. Once everyday movement is comfortable, rehabilitation can progress from gentle range work to controlled strengthening, running and ball drills. Sports physiotherapy can assess adductor and hip strength and plan a gradual return rather than relying on pain tolerance.

When to get checked

Arrange an assessment if you cannot walk normally, pain lasts beyond the initial rest period, weakness persists, or symptoms return whenever you resume training. Seek urgent care for a major forceful injury with a visible deformity, rapidly increasing swelling, numbness, inability to bear weight, fever, or a new painful groin bulge. Record the movement that caused the pain and whether coughing, stairs or squeezing the knees changes it.

Questions for a sports clinician

Ask whether the adductors, hip joint, abdominal wall or another area is contributing; which strength tests are appropriate; what training can continue; and what milestones should be met before sprinting, cutting and full play.

Questions people ask

Should I keep playing soccer with groin pain?

Do not continue movements that cause pain. Choose comfortable activity and arrange assessment if walking, strength or return to training remains limited.

Could groin pain after soccer come from the hip?

Yes. Hip joint problems can produce groin pain, particularly with deep flexion or rotation, so persistent symptoms merit a hip and muscle examination.
