Groin pain after delivery: what to know

Short answer
Groin pain after delivery may follow strain around the pelvis, hip or inner thigh, yet persistent pain or associated symptoms should be assessed rather than self-diagnosed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pain-provoking tasks
- Walking, rolling in bed, stairs, lifting and separating the legs
- Best next step for persistence
- Arrange a postnatal assessment to identify the source and guide loading
Understanding the pattern
After delivery, the groin may hurt because muscles and pelvic joints have worked under altered loads, or because labour positions and new childcare tasks have challenged the hips. Pain may appear during walking, getting out of a chair, separating the legs, rolling in bed or lifting. A deep ache at the front of the hip can point toward the hip, whereas pain near the pubic area may involve the pelvic ring, but these clues overlap.
A clinician also considers a hernia, urinary infection, wound-related problem or a blood clot when swelling, fever, discharge, leg symptoms or feeling unwell are present. The timing after delivery matters, but it does not by itself reveal the cause.
Steps that may help
Use short, comfortable walks and rest between tasks. Keep your knees and feet aligned when turning or getting in and out of bed, and avoid repeated wide-leg movements if they reproduce pain. When lifting, bring the baby close and change sides rather than twisting. A postnatal examination can guide pelvic support, hip exercises and a gradual return to household activity; stop an exercise that causes sharper pain or a clear flare later.
When to seek care
Get urgent medical help for sudden severe pain, inability to bear weight, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever, a hot swollen leg, chest pain or difficulty breathing. Seek prompt review for worsening pain, new numbness or weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, painful urination, foul-smelling discharge, or a groin swelling that becomes very painful.
Questions worth asking
Ask whether the pain is centred in the pelvic joint, hip, abdominal wall or inner thigh; whether an examination or imaging is needed; how to modify baby-care tasks; and which milestones should guide your return to exercise.

Questions people ask
Can delivery-related groin pain start after I leave hospital?
Yes. Symptoms can become clearer when walking, lifting and caring for a baby increase the demand on healing tissues.
Should I stretch the groin?
Avoid forceful stretching while pain is active. A clinician can choose gentle mobility work if it fits the examination findings.
