Groin itch and rash in females: what to know

Redness in the fold can follow sweat and friction, while a scaly edge extending onto the inner thigh can fit a fungal infection. Contact dermatitis may follow pads, liners, wipes, hair-removal products, detergent, or fragranced washes. Eczema and psoriasis can affect the groin and may also appear elsewhere. Rash on the vulva is not the same as a rash on the outer groin, and vaginal discharge, odour, pelvic pain, or urinary burning can point to a problem needing a different assessment. A groin rash does not by itself identify the cause.

Rinse gently, avoid scrubbing, and pat the area dry. Wear loose cotton underwear, change after sweating, and avoid tight leggings while the skin is inflamed. Stop new wipes, sprays, scented products, and hair-removal products. Do not put household remedies or non-prescribed creams inside the vagina. A pharmacist or clinician can help select treatment based on whether the rash is in a fold, on the vulva, or extending to the thigh. Avoid sharing towels until an infectious cause has been excluded.

Book a clinical review if the rash is new and unexplained, lasts despite removing irritants, keeps returning, or involves the vulva. Seek prompt care for open sores, blisters, significant swelling, pus, fever, severe pain, pelvic pain, or burning urine. Pregnancy, diabetes, recent antibiotics, and reduced immunity are useful details to mention. A clinician may examine the skin and take a swab if discharge or infection is suspected.
