What should you know about groin itch and rash?

A rash confined to a damp fold may fit intertrigo, while a ring-shaped, scaly edge can occur with ringworm. New soap, laundry products, pads, or clothing can cause contact dermatitis. Heat and sweating may produce prickly irritation. Atopic dermatitis can cause dry, itchy patches, and psoriasis may create a more sharply defined, persistent area. Scabies often causes intense itch with small bumps and may affect close contacts. A new medicine can also trigger a drug rash. These patterns overlap, so self-diagnosis can be unreliable.

Keep the area cool and dry, wash with a gentle unperfumed cleanser, and pat rather than rub. Wear loose clothing and stop any newly introduced product until the skin is assessed. Avoid scratching, shaving over the rash, and using leftover steroid or combination creams, since an unsuitable cream can obscure the pattern or worsen some infections. Note when the rash began, where it started, what products or medicines changed, and whether anyone close to you is itchy.

Seek urgent care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering, skin peeling, fever with a rapidly spreading rash, or severe pain.
