What should you know about groin intertrigo treatment?

Intertrigo forms where rubbing skin traps heat and moisture, such as between the upper thighs or in the groin fold. The skin may look red, raw, cracked, or moist and can sting or itch. A yeast infection can grow in the damaged, warm fold and may cause a more persistent, clearly bordered rash with small spots nearby. Other conditions can resemble it, so the appearance alone does not establish the cause.

Gently cleanse the fold and dry it carefully, especially after bathing or exercise. Loose clothing and breathable underwear reduce rubbing and heat. A clean, dry cloth or moisture-absorbing barrier may help keep opposing skin apart. Do not apply perfumed products to broken skin. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend a topical antifungal treatment when yeast is suspected; use it as directed and do not combine multiple medicated creams without advice. Recurring sweating may warrant discussion of prescription antiperspirant or another prevention plan.

Seek medical advice if the rash is painful, cracked, spreading, oozing, foul-smelling, or not settling with careful drying and friction reduction. Fever, marked warmth, or rapidly worsening redness needs prompt assessment.
