What should you know about groin crease pain?

Short answer

Groin crease pain may come from the hip joint, inner-thigh muscles or nearby pelvic tissues, and its triggers and associated symptoms help guide assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the location

The crease where the thigh meets the pelvis lies close to the hip joint, adductor muscles, tendons and abdominal wall. Pain with pivoting, deep sitting, stairs or bringing the knee upward can be hip-related; pain after a sudden stretch or kick may involve a muscle. Clicking, catching or restricted hip movement deserves examination, while a bulge that appears with coughing may need a different assessment.

Location alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician will ask how the pain began, test hip and lower-limb movement, and check strength and tenderness before recommending treatment.

Managing symptoms

For a short period, reduce deep hip flexion, forceful stretching, sprinting and movements that reproduce sharp pain. Change sitting position regularly and use comfortable walking as tolerated. Do not repeatedly test a clicking or painful movement. Once the irritability settles, sports physiotherapy can address hip mobility, pelvic control and progressive strength rather than relying on rest alone.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment for pain that persists, limits walking, wakes you repeatedly, follows a fall or is linked with catching and reduced hip motion. Seek urgent care for inability to bear weight, severe pain after trauma, fever, a rapidly enlarging swelling, or a painful groin bulge with vomiting.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the hip joint, adductor muscles or abdominal wall appear involved, which movements to avoid, whether imaging is appropriate, and how to progress from daily activity to exercise safely.

Questions people ask

Can hip problems cause pain in the groin crease?

Yes. The hip joint can refer pain toward the front of the hip and groin, especially with rotation or weight-bearing.

Is a groin crease bulge part of a muscle strain?

A visible or painful bulge needs assessment because it may involve the abdominal wall or a hernia rather than only a strained muscle.
