What should you know about gripe water and hiccups?

Hiccups are repeated involuntary contractions of the diaphragm followed by a brief closure at the back of the throat. They can follow feeding, swallowing air, a full stomach, sudden temperature changes, or laughter. In babies, brief episodes are common and usually settle without treatment.

Gripe water products vary in ingredients and preparation. They may not address the diaphragm spasm, and some contain sweeteners or herbal ingredients that are unsuitable for babies. Hiccups can also accompany Acid Reflux or, less often, stomach irritation such as Gastritis.

For a baby, pause feeding, keep them upright, and allow a calm burp before offering smaller, slower feeds. Never frighten, startle, overfeed, or give water or home remedies to a young infant unless a clinician has advised it. Check any product label with a pharmacist or doctor.

For an older child or adult, slow breathing and small sips of water may help. Avoid swallowing air, fizzy drinks, and very large meals while hiccups are active. Do not use prescription or over-the-counter Acid Reflux Medication solely for hiccups without a clinical reason.

Seek medical advice if hiccups persist, repeatedly interrupt feeding or sleep, or occur with breathing difficulty, choking, repeated vomiting, poor weight gain, severe pain, fever, confusion, or unusual drowsiness. In a baby, reduced wet nappies or refusing feeds needs prompt assessment.
