Osteosarcoma begins in bone and may affect a limb, causing lameness that does not settle, swelling, tenderness, or reluctance to exercise. A dog may hide pain, and a sudden worsening can occur if weakened bone fractures. Similar signs can come from an injury, arthritis, infection, or another growth, so symptoms cannot establish the diagnosis. A veterinarian may examine the painful area and recommend radiographs, blood tests, or a sample of the lesion.

Arrange a veterinary appointment promptly for persistent lameness, local swelling, or pain. Until then, restrict running, jumping, stairs, and rough play; use a lead for brief toileting and provide non-slip flooring. Never give human painkillers unless a veterinarian specifically prescribes them. Bring a short video of the gait and a list of any medicines.
