What should you know about grass rash on dogs?

Redness, small bumps, licking, chewing, or scabs after outdoor play can follow contact with grass, pollen, fertiliser, or other surface irritants. Fleas, mites, and fungal infection can produce similar changes, while heat and moisture may worsen skin-fold inflammation. The location matters: paws and the belly suggest contact exposure, whereas circular hair loss, intense itch, or lesions spreading beyond exposed areas may point to another cause. A rash alone cannot identify the trigger.

Rinse paws, legs, and the underside with clean lukewarm water after walks, then dry carefully between the toes and in skin folds. Prevent vigorous scratching or licking with a suitable barrier while arranging advice, and wash bedding if parasites are possible. Do not apply human steroid creams, essential oils, antiseptics, or leftover antibiotics unless a veterinarian specifically approves them. Take clear photographs and note when the rash appears, where the dog walked, and whether other pets itch.

Seek urgent veterinary help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, collapse, repeated vomiting, widespread hives, severe pain, or rapidly spreading redness. Arrange an appointment for pus, a bad smell, open wounds, fever, marked hair loss, persistent chewing, or a rash that keeps returning. A veterinarian may need to check for conditions such as contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, ringworm, scabies, heat rash, or another skin disorder.
