What should you know about granzyme b immunohistochemistry?

Granzyme B is a protein found in some immune cells that can contribute to the killing of target cells. In immunohistochemistry, a laboratory applies an antibody designed to bind the protein in prepared tissue. A coloured or otherwise visible reaction then shows where the target is present under the microscope.

The stain may help describe immune cells within or around a tumour, or help classify a lymphoid or other tissue process. A positive stain does not by itself diagnose cancer, identify its cause, or show how well treatment will work. Pathologists interpret the pattern, intensity and location together with cell shape and a panel of other markers.

Ask which tissue was tested, why granzyme B was included, and what the complete marker panel shows. The sample may come from a biopsy or a surgical specimen. Your clinician can explain whether the finding supports a particular diagnosis, adds context to immune-cell activity, or is not decisive on its own.

Keep the wording of the pathology report available when discussing results. If more testing is suggested, ask whether it involves additional stains, molecular analysis, imaging or review by a specialist pathologist.

The stain is performed on tissue already collected, so it does not create new symptoms in the body. Contact your clinical team promptly if the biopsy site becomes increasingly painful, red, swollen or draining, or if you develop fever. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe weakness or breathing difficulty after a procedure.

Ask what granzyme B staining contributes to the diagnosis, which other markers were used, whether the sample is adequate, and whether the result changes treatment or only adds descriptive information.
