Granuloma annulare presents with grouped bumps that form partial or complete rings. On the back, you may first notice a patch while changing clothes, bathing, or asking someone to look at an area that is hard to see. The centre of a ring may look relatively normal, while the border feels raised or firmer. Colour varies with skin tone and inflammation; the area may look pink, red, brown, or close to your natural skin colour.

Back lesions may be mistaken for fungal infection, eczema, insect bites, or another inflammatory rash. Granuloma annulare is not generally contagious, and its surface is often smooth rather than covered with scale. A dermatologist can assess the border, surface, distribution, and any symptoms. Do not rely on an internet image or use an antifungal, bleaching product, or strong steroid without advice, because the wrong product can irritate the back and make the pattern harder to assess. Use a gentle cleanser, avoid picking at the bumps, and photograph the area with a date for comparison. Loose, breathable clothing may reduce rubbing if the patch catches on fabric.
