What should you know about granuloma annulare contagious?

Granuloma annulare is an inflammatory reaction in the skin rather than an infection that passes from person to person. Its characteristic smooth bumps may form a ring, arc, or scattered pattern on the hands, feet, elbows, knees, or other areas. It does not spread by sharing towels, hugging, touching, or being near someone. A rash that looks similar can still have another cause, including an infection, so appearance alone should not be used to label every ring-shaped mark as granuloma annulare.

You do not need to isolate yourself or avoid normal family contact because of confirmed granuloma annulare. Keep the skin moisturised, avoid scratching, and photograph changes so a clinician can compare them over time. If the lesions are bothersome, treatment may include a prescribed topical corticosteroid or a focused intralesional steroid injection. Arrange a clinical review if the diagnosis has not been confirmed, the eruption is spreading quickly, or it becomes painful, hot, crusted, or draining. Seek prompt care for fever, facial swelling, breathing symptoms, blistering, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Those features can signal a different problem that requires timely assessment.
