Granular magnesium sulphate

Magnesium sulphate is a magnesium salt supplied in different forms. Granules are not automatically suitable for swallowing, mixing, applying to skin, or preparing for a medical procedure. In pregnancy care, magnesium sulphate may be used under close supervision for specific complications, with the route and preparation selected by the maternity team. Kidney function matters because the body clears magnesium through the kidneys.

Check the label and follow the instructions from your clinician or pharmacist. Do not substitute a granular product for an injection or add it to food or drink unless that use was specifically prescribed. Tell the care team about kidney problems and all medicines or supplements. During supervised treatment, clinicians may check reflexes, breathing, urine output, and blood magnesium levels when appropriate. An Antenatal Care Package can provide a setting for routine pregnancy monitoring, but it does not replace urgent assessment.

Seek urgent help after suspected excess use or if you develop marked weakness, unusual sleepiness, confusion, slow or difficult breathing, or reduced urine. During pregnancy, urgent review is also needed for severe headache, vision changes, upper abdominal pain, seizures, or sudden swelling.

Ask why magnesium sulphate has been recommended, which product and route are intended, how it will be monitored, and which symptoms should trigger emergency care. Confirm whether it is compatible with your other medicines.
