What should you know about antibiotics for gram-positive cocci?

Gram-positive cocci describes a shape and staining pattern seen in some bacteria; it is not the name of one infection or one medicine. These bacteria may be involved in skin infection, throat or lung illness, eye disease, or stomach infection, but symptoms can also have non-bacterial causes. A clinician may use the examination, a swab, urine test, blood test, or other sample to guide treatment. The chosen antibiotic must reach the affected body site and match the likely organism.

Take an antibiotic only when prescribed for the current problem, using the dose and schedule provided. Tell the prescriber about medicine allergies, pregnancy, kidney or liver disease, and other medicines or supplements. Do not share leftover tablets or save them for a later illness. If a sample was taken, ask how the result could change treatment. Some conditions, such as acute bronchitis, do not improve with antibiotics when the cause is viral.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, faintness, or widespread blistering after a dose, as these may signal a serious reaction. Contact a clinician for persistent fever, worsening pain or swelling, confusion, dehydration, or symptoms that do not improve as expected. New severe diarrhoea during or after treatment also needs medical advice. Cellulitis, conjunctivitis, and other infections require different assessments, so do not change medicines without guidance.
