The device provides light and magnification so the clinician can look for features such as redness, swelling, fluid, wax, discharge, or a change in the eardrum. It can support assessment of ear pain, reduced hearing, blocked-ear sensations, and suspected infection. Looking through an otoscope is only one part of an assessment; symptoms, recent illness, examination findings, and sometimes hearing tests also guide the conclusion.

Tell the clinician about pain, fever, drainage, hearing change, dizziness, recent swimming, or anything placed in the ear. Do not push cotton buds or other objects into the canal before the visit, because this can irritate the skin or move wax deeper. During the examination, stay still and mention discomfort promptly. A child may be more comfortable with a parent nearby; a child health consultation can allow time for a calm, age-appropriate examination.

Arrange medical advice for persistent ear pain, new hearing loss, discharge, repeated ear problems, or symptoms after an injury.
