Gout and wrist pain

Short answer

Gout can cause sudden wrist pain and swelling when urate crystals inflame the joint, but other wrist conditions can feel similar.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible gout signs
Sudden wrist pain, warmth, swelling, and tenderness
Other possibilities
Nerve, tendon, arthritis, or injury-related problems
Urgent concern
Fever, wound, spreading redness, or loss of hand function

Understanding a painful wrist

A gout flare in the wrist may bring rapid pain, warmth, tenderness, and reduced movement. It can occur with or without a previous big-toe flare. Wrist pain can also follow an injury or arise from nerve compression, tendon inflammation, or hand arthritis. A clinician may check the wrist, review your history, and decide whether imaging, blood testing, or joint-fluid testing is useful. A wrist symptom does not identify its cause by itself.

What to do now

Rest the wrist from activities that worsen pain and keep it supported in a comfortable position. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may ease discomfort for short periods. Use only pain or anti-inflammatory medicine that is suitable for your stomach, kidneys, heart, pregnancy status, and other medicines; ask a pharmacist or clinician when unsure. Do not massage a hot swollen wrist or force movement. Arrange assessment if this is a first episode or the diagnosis is uncertain.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for a hot swollen wrist with fever, chills, a wound, spreading redness, numbness, blue or pale fingers, or severe illness. Prompt assessment is also needed after a fall or impact, or when you cannot move or use the hand. Persistent tingling or weakness may point to nerve involvement and deserves review.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the wrist pattern fits gout or another condition, whether fluid testing is needed, and which medicine is safest with your health history. Ask how to protect the wrist during a flare and whether long-term urate treatment could prevent further attacks.
