Gout joint aspiration: what to know

A clinician cleans the skin and guides a needle into a swollen joint, often using local numbing medicine. Fluid is drawn into a syringe and may be tested for crystals, cells and infection. Removing excess fluid can reduce pressure, but it does not remove the tendency to form urate crystals. Results can help distinguish gout from pseudogout, infection, a Baker's cyst or knee bursitis.

Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, skin infection near the site and bleeding problems. Afterward, keep the area clean, follow dressing instructions and limit strenuous loading until advised. Ask when results will be available and whether your usual medicines should continue.

Contact the treating service if the site becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or starts draining, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. Seek urgent care for severe escalating pain, marked swelling or difficulty moving the limb.

Ask what the fluid test examines, whether numbing medicine is planned, how long to protect the joint, and what result would change treatment.
