What should you know about gout heel pain?

A gout flare is often sudden, intense, and accompanied by warmth, redness, or swelling. Pain may be felt around the ankle, back of the heel, or another foot joint. Heel pain also occurs with Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, nerve irritation, and stress injury. The timing, exact location, examination findings, and sometimes imaging or fluid testing help separate these possibilities.

Reduce impact activity, wear supportive comfortable footwear, and elevate the foot when resting. A cool pack wrapped in cloth can be used briefly for comfort. Do not press hard on a hot swollen area or return to sport while walking remains painful. Follow your prescribed gout plan; do not start or stop anti-inflammatory or urate-lowering medicine without checking its suitability. Orthotics or rehabilitation may help some mechanical causes after assessment.

Seek urgent care for severe pain after an injury, inability to bear weight, fever with a hot swollen foot, spreading redness, or new numbness. Arrange an appointment when pain persists, recurs, or is worst with specific loading patterns. A clinician can check whether gout is involved or whether another foot condition needs treatment.

Ask what structure is painful, whether testing is needed, how to protect the heel during a flare, and whether custom orthotics, physiotherapy, or another treatment is appropriate.
