What should you know about gout hand swelling?

An attack may involve a finger joint, knuckle, wrist, or several nearby joints. Skin can look red or shiny, and movement may become difficult because inflammation increases sensitivity. Gout is one possible explanation for hand swelling; a fracture, infection, or rheumatoid arthritis can look different or overlap in symptoms. A history of gout does not automatically explain every new episode.

Rest the painful hand, remove tight rings early, and keep it comfortably elevated. A wrapped cool pack may ease discomfort for short periods; place a cloth between the pack and skin. Avoid forceful gripping and do not massage a hot, acutely swollen joint. Use only medicines that are safe for you and follow the prescribed flare plan. A clinician may need an examination and sometimes joint fluid testing to separate gout from infection or injury.

Seek urgent care if swelling is rapidly increasing, the hand is hot and red with fever, you feel very unwell, or pain follows an injury. Prompt review is also sensible for a first attack, loss of sensation, blue or pale fingers, or inability to move the hand. Hand swelling that persists between attacks should be assessed rather than repeatedly treated at home.
