Why heartburn happens in pregnancy
Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone or in the upper throat. Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscle between the food pipe and stomach, while the growing uterus can increase pressure in the abdomen. Symptoms may be worse after a large meal, when bending, or when lying down. Heartburn is common in pregnancy and does not by itself identify a serious condition.
Recurrent symptoms can overlap with acid reflux. Upper abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or pain that feels different from usual heartburn deserves a clinician's review because other conditions, including gastritis or peptic ulcer, can cause similar discomfort.
Ways to reduce discomfort
Try eating smaller portions more often and remain upright after meals. Avoid lying down soon after eating, and notice whether rich, spicy, acidic, or caffeinated foods trigger symptoms for you. Raising the head of the bed can reduce night-time reflux; extra pillows under the head alone may not provide the same support.
Do not start an over-the-counter remedy, herbal product, or antacid without checking that it is suitable for pregnancy. A pharmacist, midwife, or doctor can recommend an appropriate option and check other medicines. Read more about acid reflux medication when you need treatment advice.
When to seek medical help
Arrange medical advice if heartburn is frequent, interferes with sleep or eating, or does not improve with simple measures. Seek urgent care for chest pressure, severe or sudden pain, trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, or repeated vomiting that prevents fluids staying down. During pregnancy, contact your maternity team promptly for severe upper abdominal pain, severe headache, visual changes, or marked swelling.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which antacid or reflux medicine fits your stage of pregnancy, whether another medicine could be worsening symptoms, and whether your pattern suggests acid reflux or a different cause. Mention how often symptoms occur, what you ate beforehand, and whether they disturb sleep.
