Understanding the burning sensation
Heartburn is a burning feeling behind the breastbone or in the upper abdomen, sometimes with a sour taste or fluid rising into the throat. It often reflects acid moving upward from the stomach, but similar discomfort can have other causes. Acid Reflux, Gastritis, a Hiatus Hernia, a Peptic Ulcer or another condition may be involved; the symptom alone cannot identify which one.
Ways to reduce symptoms
Try smaller meals and avoid lying down soon after eating. Notice whether particular foods, late meals, alcohol or smoking trigger symptoms. Raising the head of the bed can help night symptoms; extra pillows may bend the body and be less useful. Wear comfortable clothing around the waist and discuss Acid Reflux Medication with a pharmacist or clinician, especially if symptoms recur.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review when heartburn is frequent, returns despite self-care, wakes you repeatedly, or causes difficulty swallowing, persistent cough, hoarseness, vomiting or unexplained weight loss. Seek emergency help for chest pressure or pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw. Black stools or vomiting blood also require urgent care.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be Acid Reflux or another cause? Which medicine is suitable and how long should I use it? Do swallowing changes or night symptoms need investigation? Could another medicine be irritating my stomach?

Questions people ask
Does heartburn always mean acid reflux?
No. Acid reflux is one possible cause, while stomach irritation and other conditions can feel similar. Recurrent symptoms deserve a clinical review.
Can I treat heartburn every day myself?
Frequent symptoms should be discussed with a clinician or pharmacist so the cause and appropriate treatment can be assessed.
