Good antibiotics for a UTI: what to know

A bladder infection and an infection affecting the kidneys may need different assessment and treatment. A clinician may prescribe an antibiotic that targets bacteria commonly responsible for urinary infections, then adjust it if a urine culture identifies a different medicine choice. Antibiotics do not treat irritation, stones or every cause of urinary symptoms.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber tells you to stop. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use a previous prescription. Drink fluids normally, and ask about pain relief if needed. Tell the clinician about medication allergies, pregnancy, kidney problems and recent antibiotics before treatment begins.

Arrange medical assessment for burning urine, urgency or lower abdominal discomfort, especially if symptoms persist. Seek urgent help for fever, shivering, pain in the side or back, vomiting, confusion or marked weakness, as these can accompany a kidney infection or a more serious illness.
