What should you know about gonorrhoea in the eye?

The bacteria can reach the eye through infected sexual fluids or by transfer from contaminated hands. Possible features include marked redness, swelling of the eyelids, pain, light sensitivity, and thick discharge. Vision may become blurred. Eye symptoms can occur with genital or throat infection, but their presence does not establish the source without testing.

This infection can damage the clear front surface of the eye if treatment is delayed. Do not use leftover eye drops or share towels, cosmetics, or contact lenses.

Arrange same-day medical care, explaining that gonorrhoea may involve your eye. A clinician may examine the eye and collect a swab, while testing other exposed sites. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and tell the clinician about allergies, pregnancy, medicines, and contact-lens use.

Avoid sexual contact until a clinician confirms it is safe, and notify recent partners so they can receive assessment. Wash hands after touching the eye and avoid touching or rubbing it.

Seek emergency eye care immediately for reduced or worsening vision, severe eye pain, strong light sensitivity, rapidly increasing swelling, or inability to open the eye. These warning signs need assessment even if you have already started treatment.

Ask which sites need testing, when treatment should start, whether partners need treatment, and when you can safely use contact lenses or resume sexual activity.
